'FIRE ON THE MOUNTAIN' TEASE REMOVED!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“Fire On the Mountain” Tease Removed from Phish.net Setlist File

The Judge Decreed It, The Clerk He Wrote It

NEW YORK, NY, April 1, 2014 – In a surprise ruling that sent shockwaves throughout the Phish community, phish.net Tease Tsar Scott Marks has removed the “Fire On the Mountain” tease from the 12/31/95 “Drowned.”

“It was always a jamakinto, at best” said Marks, who exercised his omnipotence in all matters tease-related to override the established consensus. “This ‘tease’ was never solid, and if anything, it was a precursor of ‘Meatstick’, but it’s really just improvisational musicians jamming in the moment. Not everything is a ‘tease,’ brah.”

“We’ve collectively come to our senses; our long national nightmare is finally over” said phish.net senior editor Phillip Zerbo. “This ‘tease’ was always just a pet project of Charlie Dirksen, and despite his deafness and terrible pitch, people listened to him. Those days are now in the past, and we can move forward into a Brave New World.”

Dirksen was unavailable for comment at press time, but was heard to be muttering that he would “sue those deaf asshats back to the stone-age.”

“We considered Dirksen’s range of potential responses carefully,” said Marks. “His first response will be a lawsuit, of course. But as the President of The Mockingbird Foundation he would, in essence, be suing himself, a conflict of interest even his brilliant legal mind could not possibly overcome. We’re clear. It’s done. Finally!”

MiguelSanchez First off, this is freaking hilarious. Second, I have listened to this jam 100's of times. I have no idea where the FOTM tease is, and it's my favorite freaking dead song!!

Good call admins!!

logansquared I was at the show, own the box set, and probably listened to it a thousand times, and have never once thought there was a fire on the mountain tease in that song

sushigradepanda but what about the Unbroken Chain tease in the Island Tour Bouncin'? what about that?!?!

WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN????????

Bizarro_Jerry I prefer "Teaseslayer" as opposed to "Tease Tsar"

jarpua Why has no one ever asked one of the guys when they met them?
Then at the same time, I'm not sure how Trey would answer "TREY ANASTASIO! Did you guys tease FOTM during "Drowned" on NYE in 1995?" while he is standing in line at McDonald's.

Just_Ivy Phew. Glad that's finally over.

(This is hilarious.)

Just_Ivy Seriously, I feel like the Allies just liberated Paris. When's the ticker tape parade?
, comment by uctweezer
uctweezer Hilarious but freaking awkward when I opened .net in the back of my meeting just now. For the record, it sounds like FotM to me (Fish's drums are key here!), but there are other teases that aren't annotated that are stronger than this one. As a late 1.0 'n00b' who wasn't at the show, I'll defer to the great and knowledgeable @Icculus on this one ;)
, comment by HarborSeal
HarborSeal You know, I don't think I'd ever heard such a crisp soundboard of this segment before. First time I've ever really believed the tease was there!
, comment by braindeadr
braindeadr What happened to the Mystery Jam? If they were going to stop doing it, surely they would announce that. Or did they?
, comment by Golgiappa789
Golgiappa789 Well my speakers at work almost just blew out because I'm not used to loading this page and having jams immediately on haha. Maybe, just maybe, there was about less then 1 second where it might have sounded like FOTM? but I don't think so. drums and bass sorta mesh for a second or two.

ledzepmaster Never should have been there to begin with.

conormac http://www.phishtracks.com/#shows/1995-12-31/drowned "tease" starts at 11:51 when Fishman drops back into the steady beat. Sounds to me like thw bands noticeds that they were playing it and opted not to "Tease it," and simply abandoned it for Lizards a mere 30 secojnds later. In my opinion, a true tease would have gotten more "buy-in" from the band, and, in turn, the audience. The FOTM lick is played, then abandoned, not "Teased."

mgh2001 Those of you who "hear" it, start doing critical listening practice and exercises.

This is not an argument, it's a musical fact. A tease is a quote, at no point is FOTM melody quoted, it's similar in rhythm and melodic feel, but it's definitely not FOTM.

I don't know what else to say, no musician or musicologist with an education will suggest there is a FOTM tease.

That's where the very brief teaselet is abandoned. From ~11:45-11:51, Gordeaux plays the FOTM bass riff about 1 1/2 times. There is no denying that he plays it note-for-note once through, and then he starts the riff again but abandons it as Fishman settles into a new rhythm. The bass riff follows a few bars of Trey soloing that loosely matches the feel of FOTM. That context makes it seem like an intentional mini-tease, but whether or not it was deliberate is anyone's guess.

FACTSAREUSELESS This is hilarious. I am deafer than all of you perhaps, but speaking of teases not recognized, there is an obvious tease of Cold Rain and Snow at the end of Rock&Roll during the 20th Anniversary show in Boston, but is not listed in the notes.

What about that, huh?

unoclay Funny article. Now when will these power brokers decide it's acceptable to add audience Woos to 2013 setlists?

, comment by 12ozMouse
12ozMouse I hear a hint of the so-called tease at around 11:42 - 11:51. I think it's more serendipity than anything else. Page sets the tone but abandons it after a couple seconds. My guess is that they weren't even thinking FOTM but it just happened with some natural jam progression and a little chance. It's "there" but I don't think it was at all intended.
